Why do people ask our restaurant the recipes from our catering business?

My wife has a lot of recipes that she has learned over the years. Mostly Chinese and Filipino foods but some American French and Italian. So she refuses to give out her secrets…and more then one person said "a recipe not shared is a recipe lost" is that right?

I have never heard of a caterer or restaurant refusing to disclose their recipes. It’s the highest compliment any restaurant can get. And it is usually asked by someone who will most certainly return – with friends.
I would immediately suspect she is using something that is questionable.
I think what the "old saying" means is that if you don’t share the recipe with someone then after you’re gone no one will have it. I don’t think you should share your recipes with anyone as long as you have your business– keep your customers coming back! But, if you have children or other family, it would be nice to pass the recipes along someday so that they could make them sometime.
also now adays people like to know what they are eating with diets and everything, then you have people that cant eat certain foods and stuff
One of the nicest compliments in the restaurant business is being asked for a recipe. Have you ever seen the section in the magazine Bon Apetit where people write in asking for recipes from restaurants all over the world? And the restaurants usually comply.
I have tried to duplicate restaurant recipes, and never seem to get the same results, so it doesn’t prevent me from returning to the business! Be honored!
I’m surprised your wife won’t share her recipes. It is the highest honor to have a customer ask for the recipe. She is doing herself and her business a terrible injustice by not telling the recipe.
The recipe itself is not her secret – she learned them from other countries and cuisines. Somebody shared their recipes with her at some point and now she seems to feel that she alone is entitled to them. However, the finest chefs the world over will gladly share their recipes with their customers. It is the highest compliment a chef can get.
Your wife is apt to lose customers if she continues to refuse to share her recipes. Refusing the recipe to a customer shows that she is not customer oriented. Personally, I would never use a caterer a second time if she declined to tell me the recipe of something when I asked. I would think she was hiding something – perhaps the use of an illegal meat – such as dog.
